The Edge of Vision - The Rise of Abstraction in Photography, Lyle Rexer

"Lyle Rexer (born 1951) is an American historian of photography who is unfortunately little known in France (and not translated). This large, richly illustrated book was the first to present and analyse the experimental currents in photography, focusing on abstraction (a controversial notion in photography: let's rather say abstract appearance) from the beginnings of photography to the present day. While constructing one of the first historical and theoretical discourses on photographic abstraction, it presents some fifty artists from Talbot to Broomberg & Chanarin (the only Frenchman is Gustave Le Gray)," says Marc Lenot.

Aperture, June 2009
